Top 10 Drivers of Competitiveness – #1 Have a Growth Strategy

Have a Growth Strategy – have a good plan. Most companies either do not have a plan or if they do, it is often loose and ill-defined. Start with a BHAG, a Big Hairy Audacious Goal, which will be your three to five year plan. Then design a focused plan for this this year, your current year, with targets and budgets. Finally design a series of 30-day milestones that focus on specific activity you must do, in addition to your day-to-day stuff, to move the business forward. These 30-day milestones are perfect to help you stay focused and motivate staff. You can then reset each milestone when your 30 days are up and go again. People often say to me ‘I’ve no time plan’ so I say then ‘plan to make time’. Research shows time again that people with a big plan, a vision and a strategy are up to 20% more likely to be successful; so if this is true, which it is, then don’t just settle for a modest plan – go for a BHAG!
